If you are struggling to find the self care you need amidst the chaos that motherhood brings, try some of these steps to help you find the balance you need to not just survive, but THRIVE:
Get comfortable asking for help. Not just for what you need get done, but make sure at least once a week, you are getting help so you can take care of YOU. Read a book, go for a long walk (without a stroller and maybe even with a podcast with swear words!), pamper yourself, or go see a movie! The list is endless, just think back on the things you used to do all the time for yourself 10 years ago ;)
Assume your partner is your partner. Give them the permission to step in and take control. Share the drivers seat. Maybe you need a discussion first, or maybe, like me, you just need to get over your own expectations of yourself and allow a willing party to step in. If you don’t have a partner, find a mom friend who you can partner up with to help each other find the time you need to take care of yourself. There are plenty of online communities where you can even seek out friendships like this! (I can list some if you think that would be helpful?)
Meditate. I’m serious! Taking 5 minutes to sit in silence so you can focus on your breathing and being present is not just for patchouli scented hippies. It’s all the rage and for good reason! I love a guided meditation so apps like Calm and Headspace are a great place to turn. Put some earbuds in and focus your mind on releasing frustration, loving yourself and letting go of expectations.
Journal. I am a writer so, for me, this one is huge. But even if you don’t take some time to write down the thoughts you have circling in your brain to puzzle through them on paper, taking 5 minutes out of your day to write down one thing you’re thankful for or one thing you love about yourself will change the course of your inner dialogue with yourself.
Make a plan. Set goals, big and small, have a plan for your days and weeks and try to point your actions toward those goals. Staying consistent and having a plan to follow is a big part of feeling successful and creating a life filled with purpose and thrill!
Try it out and let me know how it goes!
